An Experimenter, Schweich has been a key supporter of intercultural exchange
Experiment in International Living alumnus and World Learning trustee Robert Schweich was recently honored with the 2006 Senator J. William Fulbright Award, given by the non-profit organization Metro International. Schweich, a mentor to many New York City youth, and an important supporter of diversity in intercultural exchange programs such as World Learning's School for International Training (SIT) and The Experiment, Schweich was honored in a reception at the United Nations.
Metro International, Inc., is a New York City non-profit organization that offers programs and services to the 50,000 international students and scholars affiliated with colleges and universities in the New York area every year. Metro facilitates programs in which visiting students interact with American citizens and local residents in ways that enable each group to learn from each other. Metro is the officially designated coordinator of Fulbright student and scholar enrichment programs in the New York City area.
Schweich was an Experimenter to the Netherlands in 1953 and Denmark in 1955. "These international experiences changed my life forever," he said in remarks at Metro's award reception.
Among the guests at the reception was Lamont Wilson, who introduced Schweich. Wilson became an Experimenter to Italy 1989 on a scholarship supported in part by Schweich, and was supported in that experience by Schweich's mentoring.
"Bob Schweich has devoted much of his life to supporting The Experiment's groundbreaking scholarship program, and in so doing has mentored many talented young people like Experimenter alum Lamont Wilson," said Ellen Holmes, vice president for development at World Learning. "The recognition of Bob, and particularly Lamont's acknowledgement of Bob for his ability to recognize talent and support young people in communities in New York City and around the world, was moving, and well-deserved by Bob," she said.
